Anwar                       This book is the only official translated wuxia novel of by the Late Gu Long (Ku Long, Ku lung) available in English to date. Gu Long is one of the three best wuxia writers ever, so having one his novels finally being recognized is indeed wonderful. While comparing it to other translated wuxia novels are rather unfair, because Gu Long has his own distinct writing style, nevertheless in technical aspect of translating, Becky Tai, the translator, exceeded the rest, mainly when compared John Minfor and Graham Earnshaw. Becky Tai maintained the writer's original writing style and mood, even if the words and sentences are now in English. Additionally, Becky kept the names and important terms in Chinese pinyin and explained them to her readers, a much better approach than changing character's name into English or ignorantly using the term "Karate" for Chinese martial arts, like Minford did in his translation of The Deer and the Cauldron. Overall, this book worths every penny and should be collected by anyone who love the "wuxia" (Chinese knight-errand) genre but unable to read Chinese characters nor any other Asian language in which many wuxia novels have been translated. The first was Christine Courniot's French translation of "Les Quatre Brigands du Huabei" available from amazon.fr. This is the first professional and complete English translation done by Rebecca Tai. Those of us who have an interest in martial arts fiction, seek out novels like this one but you do not have to be a martial arts officionado to appreciate this excellent novel. Gu Long, more than Louis Cha, has a poetic style of writing that is unique to the genre of Chinese martial arts fiction. I find the settings of his novels lush and beautiful which leaves a lot to the imagination. Gu Long has acute psychological insight into human nature combined with the human relational understanding of honour and shame. All these things aside, this if a fine adventure novel that follows the exploits of Xiao Xiyi Lang, an upstanding martial arts master who acts vis a vis an uncompromising martial code of honour. The characters are fascinating, the situations that these characters find themselves in are at times fantastic but that is typical of literature that encompasses history and fantasy. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. 闲着无聊，应和一下边城的翻译~

1、 TT WAS A fine sunny day in early autumn.这是初秋的一个美好日子，阳光明媚。（挑刺一下，边城的翻译有几个地方有点别扭，这里的“明媚”用得不太好，不如直接说“阳光灿烂”，不过能感觉得出边城是在努力润色翻译出来的文字。）   古龙原文── 初秋，艳阳天。      2、 The water was slightly warmer than the sunlight.Feng languished in the tub,resting her delicate feet on the high edge.the sunlight touched her soles as gently as a lover's hands.水比阳光更加温暖。风呆呆坐在浴盆里，把她精致的脚搭在高高的浴盆边缘。阳光轻抚她的脚底，好似情人温柔的双手。（这个“情人的双手”总感觉读起来不顺，不如直接说“情人的手”，这个地方没必要刻意强调数量吧？）       3、She was greatly pleased.她觉得舒服极了。（汗，愉快就直接翻译成pleased了，呵呵）古龙原文──她心里觉得愉快极了。   4、 After traveling for more than half a month,what could be more relaxing than a hot bath?Her whole body melted into the water.Only her half-opened eyes remained free,to admire her feet.经过半个月的劳累奔波，还有什么比洗个热水澡更让人松弛呢？她全身浸在水里，眼睛半开半闭，欣赏自己的双脚。（数量词不够准确，more than 是超过吧？还有那个melted直接就是融化了，边城不是为了刻意避开之前留下的印象吧？越看越觉得Rebecca S. 总体感觉，看完Rebecca S. Tai的翻译文字，确实是比较忠实原著的，很多用词连俺这么差的英文都想得到，呵呵，自我陶醉一下先……但是翻译过来真的没多少古龙味了，哎，原以为她会译出类似海明威写那个《老人与海》的那种简洁流畅的风格来的，不过估计也不太适合，海明威几乎是屏弃了所有的修饰语，而古龙明显不是这样，看来这要求太高了，呵呵。    法国人确实有眼光也有品位，只是不知道翻译成法文的《欢乐》效果会怎么样，可惜俺看不懂法文。但是那个封面要汗一下，这么花哨，不会是钟馗捉鬼吧？《萧十一郎》的封面还好些，很有古典韵味，但是跟内容又不太吻合了。我觉得《萧十一郎》应该比较适合美国人的口味，这个译者很聪明。不过那个简介看得俺一头汗，怎么搞得象以前看过的那些美国西部冒险言情小说一样，再一瞧又有点象英国言情小说女王芭芭拉·卡特兰的风格，如果要模仿至少也可以学学库柏吧？    比较欣赏第二个来自加拿大的评价，他读出了古龙作品的诗意和丰富的想象力，不简单呐。第一个也不错，他指出了古龙具有强烈的个人风格，但是更多的还是放在译者身上，可惜搜不到有关Rebecca S. Tai的介绍，倒是有John Minfor 和 Graham Earnshaw的介绍，有机会去读读他们译的金庸小说是个什么味道先。第三个太恐怖了，居然把《萧十一郎》和《卧虎藏龙》《英雄》《十面埋伏》放在一块比较。第四个竟然知道邵氏兄弟和楚原的《萧十一郎》，厉害啊。    PS：貌似天涯那个闲闲书话上有好些英文强人，边城何不拿过去让他们品评一下？

在作者简介中，对古龙的代表作列举了《多情剑客无情剑（The Compassionate Swordsman and the Merciless Sword）、《午夜兰花》（The Orchid at Midnight）、《猪鹰、赌局》（Hunting Hawk, Gambling Game），显然还不足以代表全部的、真正的古龙。法文版的《欢乐英雄》封面，颇似中国的年画（越看越觉得象是捉鬼的钟馗），估计设计者也是受了这方面的影响，以为可以代表中国文化的精髓。

两个英语强人，看得俺眼花缭乱，不得不佩服一把。关于译者，找到了这么一段文章：                                   ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR   Rebecca S. Tai received her master's degree from University of California, Los Angeles. She is teaching English in Taiwan.边城显然是受了林琴南的影响（对边城来说，实在是正常不过），说实在话，俺觉得他的译文，和古龙原作不相上下哩。House of Flying Daggers是“十面埋伏”？打破俺头也想不出来比这更好的译文啦。

十四娘说得很好，不过有点误解了我翻译的意思。我的翻译，是希望尽量做到平实一点，也就是说，有些地方我虽可以想到更好的词，但却不用──因为那样就变成美化原文啦。我想做的是还原老外读英文时的感受，所以有点“硬译”，这样，才能进一步突显出古龙原文在翻译中流失的味道。所以，有时我故意不用更妙的表达方法──唉，这话不能让译者听到，忒无耻了。偶尔忍不住手痒，比如那个文绉绉的“盈盈一握”──过分修饰，当时也是考虑到相关的词上下文用得差不多了，所以整一个少见点的，捞过界了。“快要燃烧的沙漠”前面少了个“热得”。“难以言传”之流，是我后来添上去的，本来也是用“无法形容”，因为良心上过意不去，觉得太对不住译者，给换了个好听点的。还有一些地方，限于个人水平，翻得很不成样子，惭愧惭愧。那四位评论的爷，第三个人留名Yi Ning Xue，一看名字就知道是同胞。第四个知道邵氏和楚原更正常，在外国，恐怕古龙的名气比邵氏导演小多了。总的感觉，这位译者翻得不错，有些地方自出机抒，比如段落的安排，并不拘泥于原著。但是古龙利用短长句结合营造出的独特节奏感，还有汉语特有的排比、对偶等句式带来的美感，译本没翻出来，这也怪不了译者。我觉得最有代表性的，还得数第一句：IT WAS A fine sunny day in early autumn.（初秋，艳阳天。）另：梧桐落mm，翻译是非常寂寞的工作，这年头，肯在这上面耗费心血的人已经不多了。买外国译本，看到译者的年纪在六十开外，心里就有底，若是个青头仔，就不大放心。我见过最强的翻译，是一个叫曹国臣的家伙翻译菲利普·迪克的名作《高城堡里的人》，达到了三花聚顶五气朝元的至高境界：每一段话都有病句，每一页都让人想撕书。读完小说的感觉，是硬生生被译者在精神上操了一把。后来，我四处搜罗此厮的资料，欲打电话过去破口大骂一番，或是往他邮箱里寄寄病毒什么的，只恨叫这名字的人太多，未果。

怎么说呢？就我看到的这几段文字来说，不是很喜欢这位译者的翻译，总感觉有点粘乎乎的，没有那种俊爽的味道。风四娘在这里被塑造得象一个家道中落的贵族少女，充满冒险精神，不甘被家庭束缚跑出来闯世界的那种。还有就是《萧十一郎》这部小说在营造场景方面具有浓重的电影蒙太奇效果，象开篇的风四娘洗澡这个镜头就有种先声夺人的意味，但是我看这个翻译就觉得好象是在看一部关于美国西部傳奇的浪漫小说，如果把它想象成电影，估计可能是那种声势造得很大全明星阵容场景很漂亮结果却因为情节老套表演平淡没有新意而票房惨败的西部电影，女主角我都想好了，就安吉丽娜·茱丽（俺其实是比较喜欢她的，委屈一下了）吧……这么说可能不厚道，但是我的感觉确实如此。也许就是太忠实原著了，译者基本上就是在逐句翻译了，读起来总觉得“硬”，不流畅──不管是中文和英文，这个语言的流畅感应该是共通的吧？而且重复使用The/This/She作为句子的开头，感觉非常呆板，我虽然没看过多少英文原版小说，但是以前学英语的时候老师就谆谆告诫过我们不要大量地重复使用某一个词开头，除非有特殊的需要，所以从这一点来看，我觉得这个译者的目的相当明显──试图原滋原味地介绍古龙小说。目的是好的，但是我觉得太难实现了。如果形和神难以两全，那我宁可它神似而不是形似。

学了十年的英文，很久不用，已经很多词汇都不认识了，惭愧。萧十一郎的封面典雅已极。古龙的作品之所以没几本被译介到欧美，是同他独特的文体分不开的，而这种文体带来的美感和韵律感，只有中文才能淋漓尽致地体现出来，翻译的难度显而易见。以下消息证实我的观点没错。────────────────────────<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="87%" border="0" style="TABLE-LAYOUT: fixed; WORD-WRAP: break-word;"><tbody><tr><td class="gray14">冈崎由美引介古龙小说  作者：联合报 记者江中明／专访  曾翻译金庸作品「书剑恩仇录」的日本早稻田大学中文系教授冈崎由美，日前与本地「风云时代」出版公司签约，未来将担任古龙部分作品日文版的监修润笔工作。  她昨天比较金庸、古龙两位新武侠宗师的作品文字风格和翻译困难度时表示，金庸的文体典雅，但这种文体在日文中，有同样典雅的语言可以对应；而古龙的文字现代感十足，虽是很简单的语法，却像是「散文诗」，译者若是按字面直译，难以传达其中的浪漫和深刻意涵，这会让才气纵横的古龙变成一名「三流诗人」。所以翻译起来「很难」。  古龙这次「东渡」的作品，是楚留香系列的「蝙蝠傳奇」、小李飞刀系列中的「边城浪子」和陆小凤傳奇，将由小学馆出版，翻译者包括与冈崎由美一起翻译金庸作品的早稻田大学客座讲师土屋文子，小说将以类似口袋书的「文库版」形式发行，预计年底出版。  冈崎由美表示。古龙小说日文版所以出版「文库版」。是基於流通性较强的因素。她说，古龙小说文体简洁、推理性强，而日本原来即有推理小说的传统，也很喜欢欧美的惊悚小说，古龙作品兼具前两种特性，她相信引介入日本後，会受到读者喜爱。  十分崇拜古龙的士屋文子则表示，古龙笔下的人物个性分明，男主角往往活泼开朗、风流倜傥，这种类型在日本的大众小说中相当少见，而日本的读者普遍认为，金庸笔下的女主角写得比男主角精彩。  冈崎由美在她今天将发表的「『剑客』与『侠客』中日两国武侠小说比较」论文中指出，中国现代武侠小说两年前在日本首次翻译介绍，第一部作品即是「书剑恩仇录」，由德间出版社出版，此後陆续有「笑傲江湖」等作品出版。  她认为，虽然中国武侠小说在日本刚刚引进，热潮还得等一段时间，但日本以前就有一种讲古代武士为主的「剑客」故事小说类型，一直受到大众喜爱；她认为，这个传统有助於日本读者接受中国武侠小说。</td></tr></tbody></table>
